To me, it is very fascinating, how Pablo climbed up the society hierachy until he earned a certain degree of popularity and political standing including a seat in the parliament and the people of Rionegro,Colombia (his hometown) look up to him for his generosity, helping the poor and sponsoring charity projects. But one thing for sure, not all people is happy with his style of leadership.

Here are the leadership mistakes that the El Patron had overlooked along the way while he lead the Medellin Cartel:

1. Leading by fear is not a good idea.
  • When you lead by fear, others will wait for you to commit a mistake. Because you show no grace & decency, neither will they willing to work for you if they can choose not to.
2. You are not always right, no leader is.
  • That is why every leader should get to know their team and really acknowledge their talent and opinions.
3. People will lose their commitment if you only motivate them with money.
  • Find out what are real needs and interests of your team and each of your employees. Let them go if you see they ahve other plans than yours. Keep close only those who are most aligned with a vission, mission and objectives of your business.
4. Even the best plan can go wrong. You cant's control everything.
  • Be flexible and open for new solutions. Accept that you cannot predict and analyze all the scenarios. Use your intellingence to adapt in new circumstances.
5. Do not demand from people more than they can handle.
  • Pushing limits too hard will makes your employees unhappy and as a consequensces they may search for ways to eliminate you from the business.
