Paradise for food lovers
Malacca is well known for its historical background and site and as well as the wide range of people from different culture and race living in harmony making Malacca listed as UNESCO World Heritage City . With deep roots in history , Malacca is also known to be food heaven for those who love to eat and people who like to explore in terms of food.
The food in Malacca here are influenced by the Peranakan , Indian , Malay and Portuguese. With so many variations in race and culture , they contribute in making Malacca a paradise for food lovers. As a food lover as I am , here's a guide on to must try food in Malacca.
1. Chicken Rice Ball
With only steamed chicken together with super soft rice balls and chili sauce are served. The chicken is top with soy sauced and chili sauce as a dipping to it. The chicken rice ball is hand- rolled and makes it look unique and attractive.
2. Nyonya Laksa
Based with rich coconut laksa gravy and served with yellow mee. Prawn, slices of fish cakes , cockle bean curd puff and hard boiled egg are added in to the noodle.
3. Naan and Chicken Tandoori
Baked bread accompanied with roasted chicken which is marinated with herbs and dahl as a dipping sauce for the naan.
4. Asam Pedas Fish
The main ingredient of this dish is fish, eggplant, long green bean and tomato. The dish is cooked in asam( tamarind) juice with chili and different spices. It is also a signature dish for Malacca state.
5. Pai Tee / Pie Tee
Also known as top hats , Pai Tee is a crunchy flour cup filled with julienned vegetables , omelet and fried shallots. These tiny treat goes well with chili sauce.
6. Nyonya Kuih
Small sized dessert which are colourful and full with flavour. My favourite is the ondeh- ondeh made from glutinous rice flour and infused with pandan juice and filled with gula Melaka or palm sugar and lastly coated with grated coconut.
7. Cendol
Is a traditional dessert made from shaved ice, coconut milk, green starched noodles with pandan flavoring and palm sugar. Other ingredient such as red bean , grass jelly or corn might included in the dessert.
8. Coconut Shake
Concoction of coconut water and flesh, ice cubes and vanilla ice cream blended together. Perfect to quench your thirst on a hot sunny day.
